Introduction

This EnterpriseDB tutorial helps you install and learn basic operations for the Postgres Plus Advanced Server database solution in an HP-UX environment. In this tutorial you will learn how to:

  • Install Postgres Plus Advanced Server
  • Check if the database server is up and running
  • Stop the database server from running
  • Start up the database server
  • Edit a database server configuration file setting
  • Activate a new configuration setting without stopping the database server
  • Use the interactive SQL tool with the database server
  • Create a new database
  • Create 2 tables
  • Add data to the tables
  • Perform a join query returning data from the 2 tables
  • Create a text based dump of the database
  • Restore the database from a text based dump

You should then be able to begin building a database and an application for a technical evaluation.

Tutorial Steps

Note: the tutorial assumes you are logged in as root.

Install Postgres Plus Advanced Server

1. Using an HTTP connectivity utility of your choice, download the Postgres Plus Advanced Server binary installer to your home directory. The URL for the installer archive is:

http://get.enterprisedb.com/beta/ppasmeta-9.0.4.8-hpux.run

2. Unzip the installer archive file:

# gunzip ppasmeta-9.0.4.10-hpux.tar.gz

and then unpack the archive:

# tar -xvf ppasmeta-9.0.4.10-hpux.tar.gz
# x ppasmeta-9.0.4.10-hpux/ppasmeta-9.0.4.10-hpux.run, 157108770 bytes, 306854 tape blocks
# x ppasmeta-9.0.4.10-hpux/README_FIRST_HPUX.txt, 2216 bytes, 5 tape blocks

This will create a directory named ppasmeta-9.0.4.10-hpux containing the installer executable and the readme file.

3. To perform a standard install, make the installer directory your current directory and execute the installer:

# cd ppasmeta-9.0.4.10-hpux
# ./ppasmeta-9.0.4.10-hpux.run

Follow the installer instructions to complete the installation. Note: when asked for either an Oracle or PostgreSQL installation, selecting Oracle will give you all of the Oracle, performance, and scalability features not found in community PostgreSQL – this is the recommended selection. You will also be asked for a password for the database superuser ‘enterprisedb’. Be sure to remember this as you will need the password later. It is also recommended to install the sample tables and procedures as an aid to quickly familiarize yourself with the product features. Accepting the default values during installation will provide you with the following installation profile:

  • Installation Directory: /opt/PostgresPlus/9.0AS
  • Data Directory: /opt/PostgresPlus/9.0AS/data
  • WAL Directory: /opt/PostgresPlus/9.0AS/data/pg_xlog
  • Database Port: 5444
  • Database Superuser: enterprisedb
  • Operating System Account: edb
  • Database Service: ppas-9.0
